The instrument consists of:
- the throne - a movable suspension allowing the latitude to be determined. The throne can be moved to set the correct latitude.
- the meridian - a fixed ring with a latitude scale
- a movable "equatorial" ring with an hour scale
- a movable declination scale for determining the months (in the center of the device) - acting as a gnomon. Each month is divided into three thirds of 10 days each. The names of the months are symbolized by letters, e.g. O - October. In the middle there is a tiny movable element enabling the correct month and date to be set.
To read the time, unfold the equatorial ring so that it lies in a plane perpendicular to the meridian. Then determine the latitude using the throne. Set the correct date on the declination scale. Suspend the device by the throne after setting the actual latitude at which you are located. The sun's rays will indicate the correct solar time. Please remember that official time may differ from solar time.
